When Did Angry Birds Come Out? Dates for Every Game

The original Angry Birds came out in 2009. Rovio’s own about page says the brand “started as a popular mobile game in 2009,” and the copyright line on rovio.com runs from 2009 to today. The original app’s store listing no longer exists, so neither store shows its release date any more, and Rovio’s remake of it, Red’s First Flight, carries a 2022 date instead.

If you’re trying to work out which Angry Birds game you played, the release dates of the whole family are more useful than one date. Here’s the full list from Apple’s own listing data, checked in September 2026.

Every Angry Birds game on the App Store, by release date #

Two of those dates surprise people. Angry Birds 2, the game most players think of as “the new one,” is now more than eleven years old. And Angry Birds Rush, released in May 2026, is the newest entry in the series.

Which one did you actually play? #

The memory people usually have is of the original: a red bird, a slingshot on the left, green pigs in wooden and glass structures on the right, and three stars per level. That game grew through episodes rather than sequels. Red’s First Flight, Rovio’s remake, describes itself as containing “all 8 original Angry Birds episodes from 2012,” which gives you a sense of how long the original kept expanding after launch.

If what you remember is choosing which bird to fire, multi-stage levels and boss pigs, that’s Angry Birds 2 from 2015. If you remember weekly tournaments against friends, that’s Angry Birds Friends from 2013. If you remember building vehicles for pigs instead of flinging birds, that’s Bad Piggies from 2012.

Why the original’s date is hard to pin down now #

Store listings carry the date an app was first published on that store, not the date the game was made. When a listing is removed, the date goes with it. When a listing is renamed, the original date stays, which is why Red’s First Flight shows a 2022 date even though it’s a remake of a 2009 game: the remake was published as a new app in 2022, originally under the name Rovio Classics: Angry Birds.

That’s a normal thing for long-running mobile games. The same applies to our own game: Kitty Kaboom shows a release date from late 2025 because it kept the store listing of the game it replaced, Robot Revenge, rather than starting a new one. Renaming a listing preserves its installs, ratings and reviews, which is why the practice is common and why old reviews on a store page sometimes describe a different game. What’s happening with the series now #

Rovio has been owned by Sega since 2023, and its own about page states that plainly. The games are still being updated: Angry Birds 2, Friends and Reloaded all had updates in September 2026, and Angry Birds Bounce, an Apple Arcade game released in July 2025, describes itself as a brick-breaker twist on the series rather than a slingshot game.

There’s also a third film. Rovio’s site lists Angry Birds Movie 3 as arriving “Only in theaters December 23, 2026.”

The games that came before and after #

Angry Birds wasn’t the first launch-and-topple game on the App Store. Crush the Castle, a trebuchet game from Armor Games, was published there on 18 September 2009, and its listing still calls it “the physics projectile puzzle game that started it all.”

The genre has kept going since.
