Slingshot Games That Work Offline: No Wi-Fi Needed

Kitty Kaboom plays fully offline: all 60 campaign levels, the hat shop, upgrades and even the daily challenge work without a connection, because the levels ship inside the app and the daily level is generated on your phone from the date. Apple Arcade games such as Angry Birds Reloaded are also built to play offline. For anything else, open it in airplane mode at home before you rely on it on a plane.

“Works offline” is rarely all or nothing. The levels usually work. The extras around them often don’t.

What needs internet in a mobile game? #

Most slingshot and physics games have a core that runs entirely on your phone: the physics engine, the level layouts and your saved progress. The parts that tend to break offline are:

  • Ads. They’re downloaded when they’re shown, so without a connection they mostly don’t appear. In free games that also means ad-based rewards stop working.
  • Online competition. Tournaments, leaderboards, head-to-head modes and live events talk to a server by design.
  • Accounts and cloud saves. Games that make you log in may refuse to start, or may not sync, until you reconnect.
  • Downloaded content. Some games fetch extra levels or art after install, so a fresh install might not have everything until it’s been online once.
  • Purchases. Buying anything needs the store.

A game that’s mostly a single-player campaign built into the app usually travels well. A game built around weekly events usually doesn’t.

Does Kitty Kaboom work offline? #

Yes. The game has no servers and no account, and everything you earn is saved on the device. Here’s what works with no connection:

FeatureOffline?
All 60 campaign levels across four worldsYes
Daily challengeYes, it’s generated on the phone from the date
Stars, coins, hats, upgrades and streaksYes, saved on your device
Hat shop and cat upgradesYes, they cost in-game coins only
Extra cats after a fail, skip level, double coins, daily giftNo, each of these is an optional ad
Banner and between-level adsMostly not shown, since they can’t load

The daily challenge detail is worth a line of explanation. The daily level is built from the calendar date, so every player gets the same layout that day without any server involved. The game uses the UTC date, which means a new daily arrives at midnight UTC: 8 p.m. on the US East Coast during daylight saving time, 5 p.m. on the West Coast. You can keep a streak going on a long flight as long as you finish one daily per UTC day. More on that in the Kitty Kaboom daily challenge guide.

With no connection, you lose the ad-based safety nets, like two extra cats after a fail or skipping a level you’re stuck on. If a trip is coming up, clear the levels that give you trouble while you’re still online, and read our Kitty Kaboom tips and tricks so you need those extras less.

Kitty Kaboom is free on iPhone, iPad and Android. Install it and open it once while you’re still on Wi-Fi.

How to test whether any game works offline #

Do this at home, the day before you travel:

  1. Install the game and open it once online. Let it finish any first-launch download or tutorial.
  2. Play a level or two online. That confirms it works before you change anything.
  3. Turn on airplane mode, and check that Wi-Fi is off too. Phones can keep Wi-Fi on in airplane mode if you’ve turned it back on there before.
  4. Close the game completely and reopen it. Some games only check for a connection at launch.
  5. Play several levels and try every mode you care about. Look for “no connection” messages, missing buttons or modes that won’t load.
  6. Check that progress sticks. Finish a level, close the game, reopen it, and make sure the result is still there.

If the game passes all six, it’ll work on the plane.

Offline-friendly slingshot and physics picks #

Kitty Kaboom #

Cats against robots, with a slingshot and seven cats that each have a mid-flight power. Fully playable offline, as covered above. Free, with ads and no in-app purchases.

Angry Birds Reloaded (Apple Arcade) #

Rovio’s remaster of the classic game is part of Apple Arcade, and Apple says Arcade games can be played “online or offline across your Apple devices,” with no ads and no in-app purchases. Its weekly leaderboard competition naturally needs a connection. Apple Arcade costs $6.99 a month in the US.

Premium games with no ads, like Red’s First Flight ($0.99, Rovio’s remake of the original Angry Birds, iOS only) and World of Goo 2 ($9.99 on iOS), don’t need ad servers. That makes them good candidates for travel, but we haven’t confirmed how each handles a fully offline launch, so run the airplane-mode test first.

Games to be careful with #

Anything built around competition or live events is a poor offline choice. Angry Birds Friends is organized around weekly tournaments and one-on-one Star Cup matches against other players, so expect those modes to need a connection. Free-to-play games with daily login rewards, timed events or energy that refills on a server clock are also worth testing before a trip.

Tips for playing on a flight or road trip #

  • Open every game once on Wi-Fi first. First-launch downloads are the most common reason a game fails offline.
  • Charge up and bring a battery pack. Physics games keep the screen and processor busy.
  • Turn the sound down or off. Kitty Kaboom has a sound toggle in Settings, which saves you from meowing at your seatmate.
  • Restart instead of losing. Kitty Kaboom’s Hot Paws coin bonus builds over three wins in a row and resets on a loss, and offline you can’t use the ad for extra cats. Restarting before your last cat doesn’t count as a loss.
  • Car trips: play as a passenger only, and never set games up while you’re driving.

Frequently asked questions #

Does Kitty Kaboom need Wi-Fi or data? #

No. You need a connection to download it, but after that every level, the daily challenge and the shop work offline. Only the optional ad-based rewards need a connection.

Can you play Angry Birds offline? #

It depends on the game. Angry Birds Reloaded on Apple Arcade is designed to play offline. Competitive games like Angry Birds Friends center on online tournaments. For the others, try them in airplane mode before you travel, since features change with updates.

Will I lose my progress if I play offline? #

Not in Kitty Kaboom, which saves stars, coins and hats on your device, online or off. Deleting the app deletes that data, though it may be included in your phone’s own backups.

Why do free games need the internet? #

Mostly for ads and live features. Free games are usually paid for by ads, and ads download on demand. Events, leaderboards and cloud saves also need a server.

Do offline games still show ads? #

Ads need a connection to load, so offline you’ll see few or none. That also means ad-based rewards, like Kitty Kaboom’s extra cats or double coins, aren’t available until you reconnect.
